How to Tell If a Business Page Is Fake — and What to Do If Yours Gets Cloned

There's a fraud pattern that's different from having your own account hacked: someone creates a new, separate page that copies your business — your name, your logo, sometimes even your posts — and uses it to scam your own customers. You don't lose access to anything. Someone just builds a convincing fake next to you.

How to spot it, from the customer's side and yours:

• A follower messages you asking about an order or offer you never posted.
• You notice a page with your business name (sometimes with a slight spelling difference, an extra letter, or a different handle) posting deals or taking orders.
• Customers mention paying "you" for something you have no record of.

If it happens to you:

1. Screenshot the fake page immediately — you'll need this as evidence, and fake pages sometimes get taken down or edited once reported.
2. Report it to the platform as impersonation, not just as spam — Instagram and Facebook both have a specific "this account is pretending to be someone" reporting option, which moves faster than a general report.
3. Warn your real followers clearly — a pinned post or story naming your one real, verified account (and linking to it) helps customers tell the difference going forward.
4. Consider verification, if your platform offers it, once you've built enough of a following — a verified badge makes cloning much less effective.
5. Document any financial harm to customers — if someone paid the fake page believing it was you, that's worth having a clear record of, both for your own reputation and in case it needs to be reported further.

A quiet prevention step: post occasionally about how customers can confirm they're on your real page (your handle, maybe a specific detail scammers wouldn't know). It costs nothing and makes the next clone attempt less effective before it starts.
